Tudor Northflag Returns with GMT and Master Chronometer Precision

A Comeback After Ten Years

It has been a full decade since Tudor first introduced the Northflag, and now the model is back with a host of upgrades. Originally conceived as a sporty nod to the 1970s and the brand's first in-house caliber, the new iteration refines both form and function. The case receives sharper detailing, the dial gains luminous ceramic blocks, and the movement now meets the stringent Master Chronometer standard. Despite these enhancements, the price remains in line with Tudor's reputation for value, sitting just above US,500.

Why the Northflag Stands Out

The original North Flag was something of a curiosity, featuring a power reserve indicator and an unconventional in-house movement for Tudor at the time. It did not achieve commercial success, so its revival is a pleasant surprise. The new Northflag, however, is immediately compelling, showcasing how far Tudor has come in design, manufacturing, and branding. It is arguably one of the most interesting models in the current lineup, alongside the recently released Monarch.

While most of Tudor's celebrated watches are variations on the Oyster case and Black Bay diver, the Northflag takes a different path. Its angular, 1970s-inspired case and distinctive dial set it apart, yet every element feels cohesive. For those seeking practicality, fair pricing, and distinctive aesthetics, the Northflag is a top recommendation.

Design and Dimensions

The Northflag features a robust steel case measuring 40mm in diameter and 12.7mm in height. The thickness is slightly above ideal due to the movement, but the case design accommodates it well. The angular silhouette echoes the first-generation model, but the finishing is noticeably more refined, with chamfered edges on the bezel, case, and integrated bracelet. Both the front and back use domed sapphire crystals.

The dial draws inspiration from vintage Tudor Ranger models, with an oversized '12' numeral and baton hour markers. A fixed 24-hour flange around the dial indicates the second time zone, making this a two-time-zone watch rather than a traditional GMT with a rotating bezel. However, the movement is a true GMT, allowing independent adjustment of the local hour hand, which also updates the date—ideal for frequent travelers.

The applied indices are actually small blocks of luminous ceramic composite, a blend of resin, ceramic, and luminescent powder. This gives the dial a subtle three-dimensional quality, though the hands themselves are flat by comparison.

Movement and Certification

Through the exhibition case back, the new MT5652-U caliber is visible—a significant upgrade from the original. This movement is a Master Chronometer, certified by METAS, Switzerland's federal institute of metrology, for both precision and functionality. It operates within a daily tolerance of 0 to +5 seconds, which is tighter than COSC's -4/+6 and Tudor's own -2/+4 standard. It also resists magnetic fields up to 15,000 Gauss, thanks to a silicon hairspring and advanced materials in the escapement and balance.
