Rolex Secondary Market Chill: Prices Slide, Dealers Feel the Squeeze

Rolex Secondary Market: A Slow Slide, Not a Crash

Recent headlines suggest Rolex prices are collapsing, but the reality is more nuanced. While many popular models have seen steady declines over the past few months, this is not the dramatic crash seen in March 2022. Instead, the market is experiencing a gradual 'yin die'—a slow, persistent downward drift.

Price Drops Across Key Models

Data from recent months shows a consistent downward trend across several sought-after references:

  • Black Ice (116506): From ¥570,000 in February to ¥540,000 in June, now around ¥520,000.
  • Tiffany Blue Dial Daytona (116506): From ¥690,000 to ¥660,000, now ¥620,000.
  • Green Gold Daytona (126508): From ¥630,000 to ¥620,000, now ¥600,000.
  • White Steel Daytona (116500LN): From ¥265,000 to ¥255,000, now ¥250,000.
  • Grey Diamond Datejust (126334): From ¥110,000 to ¥105,000, now ¥100,000.
  • 40mm Steel 'Land-Dweller' (126900): From ¥190,000 to ¥160,000, now ¥150,000.
  • Submariner Date (126610LN): From ¥108,000 to ¥105,000, now ¥100,000.

These figures illustrate a broad decline, but the pace is modest—fluctuations of a few thousand yuan per month, not the half-day drops seen in previous downturns.

Two Warning Signs for the Market

1. End-User Demand Is Shrinking

Small dealers typically move 20-30 Rolex pieces a month. Recently, many report July sales falling to just one-third of April-May levels. Moreover, this lost demand isn't shifting to other brands. Even at slightly reduced prices, Rolex remains more liquid than many expected, but the real problem lies with bundled watches—pieces dealers are forced to buy to secure desirable models. One dealer shared, 'I bought a bundle at 45% of retail, hoping to sell at 60%, but now I'm stuck at 45% with no takers.' Another invested ¥500,000 expecting a ¥60,000 profit, but after three months, only made ¥4,000.

2. Rising Inventory Levels

With slower sales, dealers are accumulating stock. Meanwhile, authorized dealers have slightly increased allocations in recent months. This combination is creating a 'race to the bottom' as sellers compete on price. For example, a dealer listed a No-Date Submariner at ¥88,000, only to see seven similar pieces flood the market within a week, driving prices down to ¥85,500, and even ¥84,000 for older warranty cards.

Is Now the Time to Buy?

As one market veteran put it: 'In a rising market, there's no ceiling; today's high price is tomorrow's bargain. In a falling market, there's no floor; today's bargain is tomorrow's high.' This suggests caution—waiting could yield lower prices, but timing the bottom is difficult. For enthusiasts, the current environment offers more negotiating power, but for investors, the trend is uncertain.

Final Thoughts

Rolex's secondary market is cooling, but not collapsing. The decline is gradual, and while some see it as a buying opportunity, others warn of a prolonged winter. For now, patience and careful research are key.
