Born in Dresden in 1826, Carl Moritz Grossmann was a pioneer of precision horology. Design and Craftsmanship: The Dial

The Tefnut 36 is a study in understated elegance. Its polished case, measuring 36mm in diameter and a mere 8.5mm in height, features gently tapered lugs and a substantial crown for easy winding. The dial is the true star, created using the rare 19th-century technique of silver-plating by friction. This labor-intensive process involves applying a paste of pure silver powder, salt, cream of tartar, and water, then rubbing it by hand onto a brass base to achieve a velvety, matte texture.

Before the silver plating, the brass base is engraved with Roman numerals, which are then filled with vibrant turquoise lacquer and fired at high temperatures. The original 1875 'M. Grossmann' logo, railway minute track, and 'Made in Germany' inscription receive a contrasting inky black lacquer. The hands, crafted in-house, are ground with diamond files and heat-annealed to a brilliant blue, adding a final touch of refinement.

Flipping the watch reveals the mechanical artistry within. The hand-wound calibre 102.1 is remarkably slim at just 3.5mm, yet packed with traditional details. The untreated German silver 3/5 plate features wide Glashütte ribbing with polished bevels. The hand-engraved balance cock is adorned with a floral motif and a discreet '1826'. Clear white sapphires set in gold chatons replace synthetic rubies, and the steel screws are heat-annealed to a violet-brown hue. The movement operates at 21,600vph and offers a 48-hour power reserve.
